Refurbish Your Home with Fine Home Décor

If you have been wondering what you could do to bring back that touch of class that your home once had then the time is now for you to get some home décor. The time has never been better than the present to make your home look plush with just a couple of minor adjustments that bring a major overall effect of beauty. You could begin by changing the sofa covers that you have had for so long that their color has changed. There is no need for a new couch when the one that you have is still perfectly okay. You could then finish up the sitting area with new cushions to go with the new sofa look and then maybe throw in a new table cloth too. All these should still leave you with money for you to consider getting new curtains. Sheer curtains can help bring out your personality in the living room showing your guests your fine taste while also bringing a whole mood to the room. If you still have some money on your refurbishing budget left then you may as well go further and change your curtain rods too because they also have an impact on how the sheer curtains look.

Achieving Ambience

Have you ever noticed how rooms can affect your mood? Don’t you just love a place with an ambience? It can be romantic, country, homey, modern, elegant, etc. It can be subtle or over-the-top. It can fill you with anything from nostalgia to longing and dreaminess. The smart decorator knows how to create atmosphere because, believe it or not, atmosphere can influence. You can observe how you feel in stores with just the right décor. You may just find the urge to buy to be stronger than usual.
Ambience can be infused in little nuances or it can be totally in your face. Many find it harder to affect certain airs in a tastefully subtle way. You have to be intelligent in choosing and adding trimmings. Ribbons, edgings, pompoms, fringes… add them to the right color and material and you can achieve the proper effect. Décor accessories here and there may be sparse, but can better represent something than an entire collection of doodads. After all, you still want your house to look like a home and not resemble theme shops. Lighting is also essential. You may have just the right pieces, but if your lighting is wrong, the proper ambience won’t be achieved.

Dressing up Plain Couches

Not many can afford to go for an elaborate sofa with print, chintz, fringes, etc. While there are those who can afford and enjoy a perfectly or professionally decorated living area, many need to consider mundane matters such as children, budget, or temporary homes. A lovely home is not necessarily impossible; it is just more of a challenge. Thankfully, many welcome and enjoy challenges.
Let’s start with choosing couches. One normally chooses something comfortable. All the other features will just have to be secondary. Many people who are choosing their first sofa tend to go for a neutral color. Those with children would probably pick a dark shade in a material that can be simply wiped clean. Those who are renting, but hope to move a permanent home someday usually think it prudent to choose separates instead of a set, again starting with a sofa that will go with any wall or furniture.
A plain sofa can be jazzed up though. If you need to be conservative with the couch, you can then go crazy with cushions or pillows. Decorative pillows will certainly add splashes of color to an otherwise austere couch. You can also drape interestingly patterned throws or afghans on the backrest of the couch. If you think having pillows and throws looks cluttered, but still want color or print, you can use attractive covers instead. There’s really no reason for things to be plain and boring.

Looking Out New York Windows

Curtains are known to enhance the loveliness of a room. In New York where the general living quarters are on the small side, curtains and window treatments are essential in suggesting the illusion of space. For cramped spaces, light fabrics in light colors are recommended.  Heavy draperies can lend an oppressive atmosphere, which is not something that goes well with the New York lifestyle with its potential for high stress levels. However, New York curtains come in all shapes and sizes, in pretty much the same way New York homes also do. It essentially all goes down to the individual style and needs of a person.
Something to note though is the fact that most New York homes are air conditioned. Home décor New York style is influenced by this. While window treatments and curtain choices need no longer address matters such as heat insulation and noise absorption, considering that the home is pretty much sealed from the elements and outside noise, a dressed window can still function as a focal point of a room. In fact, if one prefers a minimalist curtain style, one can opt to go all out with the choice of curtain rods. One can find anything from plain to romantic to funky, etc. With the number and variety of New York stores, you can pretty much count on finding whatever it is you are looking for.

Life’s Curtains

Renowned French writer Jules Renard once said, “We are born at the rise of the curtain and we die with its fall…” The quote is understandably a metaphor, but it does underline the importance of curtains.
Curtains function in a variety of ways. They can be both practical and decorative. When they lend themselves to practicality, they can be used to block light, drafts, or even water. Draperies are certainly effective in giving the interior of a building privacy from the outside world. In terms of décor, curtains can make or break a room, hence the availability of choices when it comes to material, shape, color, pattern, length, and even the curtain rods they go with. Interior decorators are very much aware of the importance of dressing windows. If anything, this part is pretty much the only glimpse an outsider may have of the interior, at the same time that the window frames one’s view of the outside.
Some of the things one may consider in choosing curtains are cleanability (how much oil and dust they can retain), blocking capabilities (in terms of ultraviolet rays, visibility, weather, and noise), fire resistance, and durability. Sheer curtains, for instance, allow the majority of light while still offering some UV protection. During the day, they offer privacy while still allowing people inside to view the outside. However, they are not particularly good choices for weather insulation. If they don’t meet one’s needs, an ocean of choices is still available to choose from.

Mix and Match

Use throws, as indicated, to match cushions, decorative pillows, curtains, voiles, panels and trimmings, such as swags or valances. Select velvet or silk throws to complement balloon window treatments in the same fabric. Chenille throws often look nice with tab top curtains and valances in chenille as well. Throws made of chenille are available in a wide assortment of shades, tints and weaves and are heavier than other throws. They look nice when incorporated with such designs as Tudor and Gothic styling.

Linen and Cotton Throws

Tie top curtains can be paired with linen and cotton throws. Linen and cotton throws are useful accessories for protecting sofas and chairs. They make nice duvets as well when they’re styled with a lining for warmth. Use them with Mission styling, French Country and Shabby Chic designs.
