Pillows as Decorative Pillows

Nothing beats the comfort that a soft pillow offers a tired and weary head. Without a doubt, pillows are extremely functional. However, whether inside or outside the bedroom, pillows can also be decorative. Throw pillows make great accessories for your couches, arm chairs, beds, divans, etc. Throw pillows are usually slipped inside cases, so it’s easy for them to compliment the style and colors of the rest of the room. In this manner, you can also easily switch around the covers depending on your whim. It is also important to note that if you cannot afford to go with anything but safe and neutral when it comes to your actual furniture, you can make up for that restraint with décor accessories such as your throw pillows. You can easily risk bold colors and print. You can also make them go with other accessories like throws or sofa panels and your drapery. Naturally, it is better for throw pillows to come in soft materials like linen, wool, chenille, or taffeta. They might be pleasing to the eyes, but you would still want them to be satisfactory pillows that can comfortably support your back, neck or head. Most throw pillows come in squares of various sizes, but they may also be available in other shapes. Have several throw pillows in your home and have fun arranging them.

Decorating with Pillows

Throw pillows make great accents for any room. An attractive arrangement of them can transform a plain bed. In the living room, decorative pillows can make your sitting area look more interesting and appealing. In choosing accent pillows, the rule is usually not to partner print with another print, thus if you have a printed couch, plain pillows would be a safer choice. However, those with an eye for eclectic mixes can sometimes spot prints that mesh well without the overall effect of looking too busy.
One of the main considerations in picking out decorative pillows is color. It’s best if you set out to shop with a swatch of your couch or bedclothes material so you can put it against potential pillows and see if they go together. Anybody who has had the experience of matching outfits knows the importance of choosing the right shade. Of course, it’s not only the couch or the bed that the throw pillows should compliment; you also have to imagine the effect they will have on the entire room. Fabric is also key. Choose the correct one and you can add the suggestion of elegance to what used to be an inexpensive looking setup. You should also realize that in the case of choosing decorative pillows, size does matter. Small pillows will just flop or drown in one of those majestic beds or couches. Do not forget about the theme of the room either. The color, fabric, and size may be right, but if you put an avant-garde type pillow in a romantic cottage type room, it’s a pretty good bet that the result will be garish.

Dressing up Plain Couches

Not many can afford to go for an elaborate sofa with print, chintz, fringes, etc. While there are those who can afford and enjoy a perfectly or professionally decorated living area, many need to consider mundane matters such as children, budget, or temporary homes. A lovely home is not necessarily impossible; it is just more of a challenge. Thankfully, many welcome and enjoy challenges.
Let’s start with choosing couches. One normally chooses something comfortable. All the other features will just have to be secondary. Many people who are choosing their first sofa tend to go for a neutral color. Those with children would probably pick a dark shade in a material that can be simply wiped clean. Those who are renting, but hope to move a permanent home someday usually think it prudent to choose separates instead of a set, again starting with a sofa that will go with any wall or furniture.
A plain sofa can be jazzed up though. If you need to be conservative with the couch, you can then go crazy with cushions or pillows. Decorative pillows will certainly add splashes of color to an otherwise austere couch. You can also drape interestingly patterned throws or afghans on the backrest of the couch. If you think having pillows and throws looks cluttered, but still want color or print, you can use attractive covers instead. There’s really no reason for things to be plain and boring.
